Object information
At the heart of Friedrichshain, and right next to the Eldenaer Höfe, cds laid the foundation stone in September 2012 for a building meant for mixed use: the residential and commercial building christened "Eldenaer Tor". It offers 700 square metres of living space and 800 square metres of floor space for a day nursery.
The existing "Eldenaer Höfe" with their 82 town houses has now been completed by the addition of the new "Schlussstein" on Eldenaer Straße. Unlike all the other buildings in the new district, the "Eldenaer Tor" is completely new and was planned independently of those elements which were to be preserved and were listed. At the same time, the new building is intended to form part of the overall ensemble. The intention is for the design relationship between the new building and the old elements to be discernible at first glance and for the differences between the ages and the concepts to emerge only on closer scrutiny. This is to be achieved, on the one hand, by using the same materials in the new building as in the existing ones, above all bricks and plaster. On the other, the new building is to be constructed as a flat, elongated element with vertical pilaster strips to ensure that its balanced proportional relationship with the similar construction of the older halls in the "Eldenaer Höfe" is maintained.
As it is mainly young families who have moved into the neighbouring town houses, a large number of nursery places have been needed there. The focus of our project development focus has been on young families from the beginning. The arrival of the "Klax" nurseryin the commercial unit was intended to alleviate the urgent shortage of daycare places.
