Demonstrations against the rent cap

The Berlin construction industry and real estate industry associations are demonstrating against rent caps

On December 9th, 2019, around 2,000 participants from business associations in Berlin and around 300 construction vehicles demonstrated against the planned rent cap. After a rally with vans, trucks and low-loaders from the Berlin construction and housing industry, a one-hour rally was held in front of the Brandenburg Gate. A huge pot lid with the inscription: "Your rent cap costs our jobs", which was raised on a construction crane, floated symbolically over the heads of the demonstrators.

The construction industry and the alliance “New Paths for Berlin” had called. The “BERLIN.KANN.MEHR!” initiative with the “Courage instead of Anger” campaign was also represented. The Berlin/Brandenburg regional association of the Federal Association of Independent Real Estate and Housing Companies (BFW) is one of the people behind the initiative.

With the rent cap, the Berlin state government wants to freeze rents in the capital for the next five years. From the point of view of the building associations, the rent cap harms the housing and construction industry and new housing construction. He ensures that renovation and new construction fell massively. The red-red-green Senate has already approved the rent cap, and Parliament is due to make a final decision in January. An expert hearing will be held there this week.
